Our Lesson Program

Building Confidence
through Achievement

Our Philosophy

adar.jpg

The primary goal at Artemis Farm has always been to create confident, competent, independent, and SAFE riders.  We take the time with each student to make sure the fundamentals of riding are correctly understood and executed.  We believe by doing so we have laid the foundation to successfully build our skills upon and continue to advance our riding.

Our lesson horses are experienced, kind teachers who have been specially selected for their temperments and knowledge.  We have horses suitable for nervous riders just starting out; through experienced show riders.  Our horses are well cared for and happy.

Part of learning to ride horses involves learning how to take care of them.  Each rider is taught how to properly groom and tack up their horses.  Riders are expected to groom and tack their own horses before every lesson.  After riding time is over, riders are also taught how to properly cool out their horses and put them away for the evening.  Overall, this adds approximately one hour to each session.

Our lesson schedule primarily consists of group lessons.  During the school year they are available Tuesday - Fridays at 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM.  Group lessons consist of no more than 6 riders.  Private lessons and leadline lessons are available by appointment only.  During the warm summer months lessons are scheduled during the cool of the mornings and evenings.  Our lighted rings and indoor arena allow for year round riding.

Our Staff

Diane Miller - Barn Owner, Barn Manager, Trainer

Diane has been in the horse business for over 30 years.  Her experience ranges from the top hunter/jumper barns to Thoroughbred racing to breeding quality Thoroughbred horses for race and show.  She has owned and operated Artemis Farm for 15+ years.  Diane lives on property with her husband, Mark, and mother, Marie.  She is always available to share her knowledge with our riders.  Currently, she is available for group, adults only lessons, on Thursday and Friday nights at 6:30 PM.

Aimee Poris - Instructor

Aimee is our primary riding instructor for our lesson program.  She has been riding and training horses for 19 years.  Aimee grew up working around the farm for Diane at the age of 12.  This has developed into a special relationship between barn-owner and instructor.  It creates a no-drama, family atmosphere.  While only owning one horse herself in the last 19 years, Aimee learned to ride and compete on whatever horses were available at the time.  This gives Aimee the ability to help her riders work through problems and get the best out of both horse and rider.  She understands there is no "one-way" to train a horse or rider.  Safety and correctness are emphasized while learning.  Riders do not move forward until they have mastered the skill set they are currently working on.  Although most lessons are taught in group sessions, Aimee does not teach in a "nose to tail" environment.  Each rider is worked with individually on the skills they need to improve.  Riders are encouraged to think independently and are involved in the training process.  Aimee also understands the importance of having fun while riding.   Aimee's greatest pleasure comes from watching her riders achievements and confidence grow.
